MH

Martin Holbrook

British expatriate, Chiang Mai

"I had been sitting on a question about my UK pension and its interaction with my Thai tax residency for nearly two years without being able to get a clear answer. Thara Counsel's Assessment gave me that clarity in a single meeting. The written summary was exactly what I needed to share with my UK adviser."

Pratheep Tantirat

Retired civil servant, Bangkok

"The team took over all the correspondence with the Government Pension Fund on my behalf, which I was very relieved about. The process took about eight weeks. Communication was consistent and I was never kept guessing. I would have welcomed slightly more detail on the mid-stage updates, but the end result was solid."

Anne Lefebvre

French national, Phuket

"Dealing with a contested pension across two countries felt overwhelming until Thara Counsel took it on. They were patient in explaining the French side of things as well as the Thai, and they kept me informed throughout. The closing report was very thorough and something I will keep for reference."

Suthida Chaisuwan

Healthcare professional, Khon Kaen

"I came to Thara Counsel after a previous adviser had left my claim in a confusing state. They reviewed the situation carefully, explained what had gone wrong, and handled the resubmission. Straightforward throughout. I particularly appreciated that they never made me feel foolish for the earlier confusion."

Robert Keane

Irish retiree, Bangkok

"Helpful and professional. The Assessment was worth doing just to understand what I actually have and what I don't. Took about ten days in total. I did not end up needing further services, but I would not hesitate to return if something more complex comes up. Reasonable fee for what was provided."

Wanchai Pornprasert

Business owner, Pattaya

"My matter involved the Social Security Fund and some complications from a period when I had worked for a foreign employer. Thara Counsel handled it without drama. They were clear about what was possible, managed expectations sensibly, and delivered what they said they would."

Case Studies

A closer look at how some matters unfolded

These summaries describe typical situations — details have been changed to protect client privacy.

Case Study 1 — Pension Position Assessment

A retired teacher uncertain about her entitlements after a career split between Thailand and Australia

The Challenge

The client had worked as a teacher in both Thailand and Australia over a thirty-year career. She was approaching retirement and had received conflicting information about whether her Thai contributions and her Australian superannuation could both be accessed, and how her current Thai residency affected the Australian portion.

Our Approach

We conducted a Pension Position Assessment, reviewing her contribution records from both countries, the relevant bilateral arrangements, and the current regulatory position on foreign pension receipt for Thai residents. We produced a written summary setting out her entitlements clearly in both jurisdictions.

The Outcome

The client came away with a clear picture of her position for the first time. She chose to proceed independently with the Australian portion and asked us to handle the Thai correspondence as a separate Managed Correspondence engagement. Both matters were resolved within three months.

"I had been confused about this for years. It sounds simple when you explain it that way."

Case Study 2 — Full Pension Defence

A disputed Government Pension Fund entitlement following administrative changes at a former employer

The Challenge

The client's former employer had undergone a restructuring, and during that process, several years' worth of pension contributions had been incorrectly classified. The fund was disputing the client's calculated entitlement, and a formal objection process had already begun before the client engaged us.

Our Approach

We took on the Full Pension Defence engagement, reviewed all available employment and contribution records, prepared a formal submission addressing the misclassification, and corresponded directly with the fund throughout the process. The matter required two rounds of formal submissions over approximately five months.

The Outcome

The fund accepted the corrected calculation. The client's entitlement was revised upward by approximately 22% compared to the disputed figure. A closing report was provided summarising the final position and documenting the resolution for future reference.

"They kept me informed every step of the way and never made it feel more stressful than it needed to be."
